Benji, who wasn't wearing a GPS tracker, was more fortunate than other dogs who may never be found

(Newswire.net — December 23, 2015) Seal Beach, California — the crowdfunding and pet adoption site “PoundWishes” has published a new article featuring essential pet loss prevention tips.

The new article, which is entitled “Benji’s Story: An Abandoned Dog is Given a Second Chance” and available on PoundWishes’ website at http://poundwishes.com/arts/benji.php, starts off by chronicling the heartbreaking, but ultimately inspiring story of a seven month old puppy named Benji, who was discovered earlier this year at a Miami, Florida animal shelter.

Benji, who was without a collar or microchip, had sustained such massive injuries that the shelter felt he was beyond recovery. Fortunately, the Miami-based nonprofit animal rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing group “A Way for a Stray” intervened and, in partnership with PoundWishes, launched a successful crowdfunding campaign that offset some of Benji’s medical treatment costs – which paved the way for him to fully recover, and find a forever home within a couple months.

“Benji’s story has a happy ending, but unfortunately thousands of other pets aren’t and won’t be as lucky,” commented Curtis Taylor, CPO and Co-Founder of PoundWishes. “That’s why we’re urging people who generously and compassionately offer a forever home to a rescued pet, to make loss prevention their immediate and top priority. It’s not an exaggeration to say that it could be a matter of life and death.”

According to Taylor and his team at PoundWishes, pet owners should do the following as soon as possible to help keep their new family member safe:

  • Add an on-collar GPS tracking device, which lets them track their pet via smartphone app.
  • Install a microchip, and ensure that address and contact information is updated as necessary.
  • Use an easy-to-read ID tag with address information – and not just their pet’s name.

“Obviously, following these tips will not eliminate the possibility of a pet getting lost,” added Taylor. “However, doing so will dramatically increase the chances that a lost pet will be found quickly and safely, and reunited with their very relieved family.”

About PoundWishes

PoundWishes is a dynamic and interactive crowdfunding and adoption platform for pet rescues and shelters, and for those who are willing to help. The nonprofit organization is the dream of Mckenzi Taylor, who was diagnosed with leukemia as a young child and granted a “Princess for a Weekend” wish by the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Her experience with illness and the support she received inspired her to help others. In early 2014 Mckenzi found her calling while visiting a shelter and seeing first-hand the helplessness and need of the animals. She asked her dad why they don’t have a Make-a-Wish for dogs, and PoundWishes was born.
